AEJMC History Division Announces Winners of the 2023 Jinx C. Broussard Award for Excellence in Teaching of Media History

The History Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) has selected Ira Chinoy, Caitlin Cieslik-Miskimen, Bailey Dick, and Autumn Lorimer Linford as winners of the 2023 Jinx C. Broussard Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Media History.

The award acknowledges original, creative practices that journalism educators and media historians use in their classrooms to teach media history and seeks to share those techniques with other instructors. Ideas and practices focused on diversity, collaboration, community, and justice receive special attention in the selection process. The award is in its fifth year.

The winning practices submitted by Chinoy, Cieslik-Miskimen, Dick, and Linford will be featured in a panel at the 2023 AEJMC National Convention in Washington, D.C. Winners will also be honored at the division’s awards gala at the convention. Summaries of their winning practices will be shared on the division’s website after the convention.

This year’s winning practices are wide ranging. Dick’s, for instance, shares three projects that build practical storytelling skills while deepening students’ understanding of media history. Linford encourages students to connect past to present by listening to the podcast Journalism History before pitching their own episodes to the show. Chinoy shares a “Decades Research Project” assignment that focuses students’ attention on past media innovations, while Cieslik-Miskimen helps students grapple with and efficiently present historical topics through quick-moving “Ignite” presentations.

“This year’s winning submissions are great ideas that anyone teaching media history can use in their own classrooms,” said Dr. Ken J. Ward, chair of the History Division’s teaching award committee. “They’re tested, they’re creative, and can bring a spark to anyone’s course. I’ll be excited to see these ideas presented in Washington.”
