A full program awaits History Division members at convention

The History Division schedule is set for the upcoming AEJMC annual convention in Montreal, and it’s a full schedule.

History Division sessions begin on Tuesday, August 5, with a pre-conference research panel devoted to increasing the visibility of our research.

The schedule includes research, teaching and PF&R panels each day through Saturday. The History Division poster session will be Thursday morning at 8:15, and the annual business meeting is that evening at 6:46. There is also an off-site activity Thursday: a tour of Cinémathèque Québécoise at noon.

Call for Papers – Symposium on the 19th Century Press, the Civil War and Free Expression

The steering committee of the twenty-second annual Symposium on the 19th Century Press, the Civil War, and Free Expression solicits papers dealing with U.S. mass media of the 19th century, the Civil War in fiction and history, freedom of expression in the 19th century, presidents and the 19th century press, images of race and gender in the 19th century press, sensationalism and crime in 19th century newspapers, and the press in the Gilded Age. Selected papers will be presented during the three-day conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 6-8, 2014. The top three papers and the top three student papers will be honored accordingly. Due to the generosity of the Walter and Leona Schmitt Family Foundation Research Fund, the winners of the student awards will receive $250 honoraria for delivering their papers at the conference. Spring 2014 Clio is available

The Spring 2014 edition of Clio, the history division newsletter, is now available. This issue features wrap-ups of the Southeast Colloquium and the Joint Journalism and Communication History Conference. Division head Kathy Roberts Forde explores the connection between history and sociology, PF&R chair Lillie Fears considers the benefits of humanities experiences for professional development and co-graduate liaisons Carrie Isard and Annie Sugar share some teaching strategies for new history instructors. The issue also contains information about history awards offered through the American Journalism Historians Association.

Reviewers needed for convention paper submissions

The History Division needs reviewers for papers submitted for the 2014 AEJMC convention in Montreal.

If you are willing to review papers, contact Yong Volz at volzy@missouri.edu. Indicate your area of expertise and/or interest. The division needs about 75 reviewers for the competition.

Graduate students are not eligible to serve as reviewers, and, in genera, reviewers should not have submitted their own research into the competition.

History Division Call for Papers for 2014 AEJMC Convention

The History Division invites submissions of original research papers and historiographical essays on all aspects of media history for the AEJMC 2014 convention in Montreal, Canada. All research methodologies are welcome.

Papers will be evaluated on originality and importance of topic; literature review; clarity of research purpose; focus; use of evince to support the paper’s purpose and conclusions; and the degree to which the paper contributes to the field of journalism and mass communication history. Call for submissions regarding preserving news content – Newspaper Research Journal

Newspaper Research Journal is seeking submissions for a special issue focused on the preservation of news content. “Capturing and Preserving the ‘First Draft of History’ in the Digital Environment” will focus on issues related to preserving content, particularly “born digital” content such as “big data” projects and interactive visualizations.

Special issue editors Kathleen A. Hansen and Nora Paul are looking for manuscripts that will provide insights into the challenges and issues news organizations are facing with respect to capturing the daily product, efficiently storing it and making it accessible to users. Social-scientific and critical-cultural approaches will be considered. Historical perspectives are welcome.

Participants needed for AEJMC grant writing workshop

The History and Public Relations divisions are co-sponsoring a pre-conference grant writing workshop in conjunction with the 2014 AEJMC convention in Montreal, and participants are needed for part of the program.

The workshop will feature two panels. The first, “promoting our scholarship and ourselves,” has already been organized. The second panel session will focus on grant writing. Organizers are looking for some History Division members who’ve been successful in grant writing to join the panel.

The pre-conference workshop will be held on Tuesday, August 5 (the convention begins the next day). If you are interested in participating, contact Lisa Burns at Lisa.Burns@quinnipiac.edu. Include a brief bio about your experience with grant writing. Organizers are hoping to finalize the panel by mid-February.

History Division website now includes syllabi, sample assignments

A new teaching resource has been added to the History Division website.

History Division members have contributed items to create a collection of syllabi and sample assignments for courses related to journalism history. The collection includes syllabi for courses focusing broadly on journalism history as well as courses on specific areas like electronic media or legal history. There are syllabi for both undergraduate and graduate classes, and some members have contributed sample assignments as well.

The collection of syllabi and assignments is linked from the Resources page.
