Teresa Mastin

Where you work: Michigan State University, Department of Advertising and Public Relations , Professor and Chairperson

Where you got your Ph.D.: Michigan State University, 1998

Current favorite class: All classes that allow myself and the students to connect by way of our past, present, and future, which is essentially every class I teach. I appreciate that infusing these concepts into each course helps us to think well beyond those of us in the room. I am currently teaching Contemporary Issues in Advertising (and Public Relations)

Current research project: The one that is most timely is revisiting two articles that myself and colleagues published in 2004 and 2005 that explored slavery reparation.

Fun fact about yourself: I am double middle child, that is, the fourth child of eight and the middle of the the girls. I am a classic middle child.

Kimberly Wilmot Voss

Where you work: I am a full professor of journalism at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida. I am also affiliated faculty with the Women’s Studies program at UCF. I just concluded my term as the program coordinator of journalism.

Where you got your Ph.D.: I earned my PhD at the University of Maryland under Maurine Beasley.

Current favorite class: The History of American Journalism during which I teach online to 125 students, three times a year.

Current research project: I am writing a book about the history of fashion journalism in the women’s pages of American newspapers from the 1940s through the 1970s; it will come out in 2020. I am also working on home ec journalism research and an oral history project about food editors in the 1970s-1980s.

Fun fact about yourself: My two children are named for my research subjects: Curtis Castleberry (husband of women’s page editor Vivian Castleberry), James Bellows (famed newspaper editor and husband of women’s page editor Maggie Savoy) and Paul Myhre (University of Missouri professor, head of the Penney-Missouri Awards and champion of the women’s pages).

Noah Arceneaux

Where you work: School of Journalism and Media Studies, San Diego State University

Where you got your Ph.D.: University of Georgia, 2007

Current favorite class: Before I become Interim Director, I was ramping up to become the regular instructor for one of our biggest classes, JMS 200: Introduction to Contemporary Media. I loved that it covered a range of topics, including the music industry and videogames.

Current research project: My research has been on hold since I stepped into administration in Fall 2018, but I have plans to begin working on an extended history of radio in San Diego. This would extend back to the era of wireless telegraphy, and also include all the cross-border radio that we have.

Fun fact about yourself: In the mid-90s, I was a page for CBS Television in New York. In addition to occasionally working in the newsroom, I also did audience control for talk shows, including those from Geraldo, Joan Rivers, and of course Letterman. On one memorable occasion – I and another page formed a physical shield to prevent fans from rushing Zsa Zsa Gabor and Dom DeLuise. That is no joke, it really happened.
