The History Division makes several awards annually recognizing outstanding teaching and scholarship.
Awards and criteria are listed below.
Jinx Coleman Broussard Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Media History
This award is presented to the winners of the division’s Transformative Teaching of Media and Journalism History ideas competition.
Covert Award
Presented annually for the best mass communication history article or essay. The award was endowed by Catherine L. Covert, first woman head of the History Division.
Dicken-Garcia Thesis Award
The Dicken-Garcia Thesis Award recognizes the outstanding mass communication history thesis completed in the prior calendar year.
History Book Award
Presented annually for the best journalism and mass communication history book.
Shaw Senior Scholar Award
The Donald L. Shaw Senior Scholar Award will recognize an individual for excellence in journalism history research who has a minimum 15-year academic career and a record of division membership
Sweeney Award
The Michael S. Sweeney Award recognizes the most outstanding article published in the previous volume of the Journalism History journal.
Tom Reilly Award
The Tom Reilly Award recognizes excellence in journalism history research.
